Now we are ready to start.

Speaker A

The Internet enforces literacy and worldwide communication. I’ve talked to people online from all around the world. World knowledge is always a positive thing. With just a few clicks of the mouse, you can be learning about evolution or symptoms of physical ailments, how to make a chocolate cake, or anything else you can dream of. You can basically self teach yourself in any subject using the Internet. Now that we can place some security in our computers, most schools have computer labs. Students do vital research and homework using the Internet. It saves time and gives them the option to find the necessary information online.

Speaker B

For me, the Internet is like fire. It depends on how people use it. If you use it the right way, it cooks food for you and warms your room, but if you use it in a bad way, it will harm you. With the Internet, we can communicate ideas faster and to a larger audience. At the same time, it has spread the rot of mankind as well. The racism and ignorance that you witness on the Internet can expose the problems that exist in today’s society. So I would not say that the Internet is always making the world better!

Speaker C

The Internet gives people the opportunity for immediate communication, whether through email or instant messaging. This is especially helpful for people in different countries, for example, America and Italy. If you have a family in other parts of the world, it is far cheaper to communicate via the Internet than it is to talk on the phone or send letters. I can chat with my friends half way across the globe for next to nothing and voice chat is almost phone quality. Because of this, the Internet is a great substitute for the telephone and the postal service.

Speaker D

Lots of people don’t know what they would do if they didn’t access the Internet at least once a day. It’s really sad that we depend so much on something so trivial. I cannot see how the Internet has made our lives any richer. If we weren’t on the Internet, we would be talking to real people about real issues and we would not be so obsessed with other people’s lives. The Internet has made the world a smaller place, and somehow cheapened the diversity which makes up our world. I suppose we will be the last generation who goes out into the world to discover things by ourselves.

Speaker E

The Internet is obviously useful if it’s used as a tool for learning. However, it is also a very dangerous tool considering that it could turn the whole world into chaos. There will always be hackers who break through the newest anti-virus programs and gain control over your computer using secret backdoors. And if you are not secure, they can access your personal data, like credit card numbers, social security or home address. It’s not very hard to find someone on the Internet, trust me. People regularly have their identities stolen. Fortunately, if you know what you’re doing, this almost never happens.

Speaker F

The Internet has completely changed my life. I run my own web design and development company. I live and play on the web. I also have my telephone service run over my internet connection. If I had to estimate, I would say that over ninety-eight percent of my total communication with the world is done over the web in some form or another. I have an entire bookshelf full of books on Networking. I run a gigabit network in my house and own two network laser jet printers. Without the web I would not have any dreams, aspirations or source of income. It is vital to my existence.

Now we are ready to start.

Tim: Alan, would you like to see the pictures of my holiday in Italy?
Alan: Sure, what was it like?
Tim: Ah, the holiday was great! The food was great! But the traffic was horrible!
Alan: Really? Why was the traffic horrible?
Tim: Actually, the general skill level of drivers in Italy is rather bad. Driving too fast for conditions, overtaking in stupid places and driving while talking on a mobile phone are all very common there.
Alan: Oh, Tim! Did you have any accidents?
Tim: Luckily, we didn’t. But the death rate on the roads in Italy is not funny at all. Anyway, I don’t want to think about it!
Alan: OK, OK, let’s return to your positive impressions. Oh, what a beautiful picture!
Tim: Yes, this is a picture of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It was a great feeling to stand right in front of such a fantastic building. But, honestly, the tower didn’t seem to be that leaning.
Alan: Incredible! I’ve always wanted to climb it. Did you do that?
Tim: Yes, we climbed to the top! It was raining that day, but it was still wonderful.
Alan: Was it scary?
Tim: No, I wasn’t frightened at all. It’s not very tall, actually.
Alan: And what’s this?
Tim: That’s a photo of the River Arno in Florence. That’s the ‘Ponte Vecchio’, which means the ‘Old Bridge’.
Alan: Yeah, I know. It’s like the Tower Bridge in London.
Tim: Not exactly. Yes, it’s the symbol of the city but unlike the Tower Bridge, it has small houses on both sides of the bridge.
Alan: It’s really charming. And what was Florence like? Did you like the city?
Tim: It was marvellous. There were beautiful old medieval buildings in the city, impressive cathedrals and churches, and lots of wonderful museums.
Alan: How was your Italian?
Tim: My Italian wasn’t very good. But many Italians speak English very well. I was really impressed!
Alan: Oh, this picture looks wonderful.
Tim: Yes, that’s a shot of a tasty pizza served by a beautiful Italian girl! You know, Italians are famous for their food and wine. So we didn’t miss a chance to try traditional dishes.
Alan: I’m so jealous … I hope to visit this country some day.
Tim: That’s a really great country. I’d recommend Italy anytime!

Now we are ready to start.

Many people have a casual attitude towards art and I was no exception. But in 1989, I finally realized that life might have something more to offer. My husband Ray had asked me to retire six months earlier and I somehow began watching an oil painting show on TV, ‘The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross’. I was fascinated. It was not very long before I really wanted to try and paint along with this man on TV. My first finished painting was a landscape. Everyone praised my work and encouraged me to continue and gradually painting became my absolute passion in life.

A few months later we started looking to buy a four bedroom house. The one we found and really loved had brand new lush, thick carpet in all the rooms except one small bedroom in the back corner. This room had old, stained carpet and needed repairs but when the renovations were complete, it turned into the perfect ‘Art Studio.’ I painted constantly; almost day and night. I would often finish two paintings per day!

About a year later we began attending a little church in our neighbourhood. When the Pastor and his family found out that I was an artist, they asked me to teach their sons how to paint. I believed that God had given me the ‘gift’ of painting so I did not charge any money for the art lessons and we provided all the supplies needed for the lessons except the canvas. The next five and one-half years were filled with students from ages 6 to 70 coming in and out of my Studio twice per week and learning how to paint. At one time, I had 18 students per week.

This was a great time of learning and growing for me as an artist. After I stopped teaching Art, my interest moved from painting landscapes towards painting people. This was very foreign to me because I had never learned how to draw very much. During these years, I sold paintings, accepted commissions for specific works and did plein air paintings in public occasionally.

My husband, Ray, had also developed a great interest in painting. We took a spring vacation near a beautiful large lake in Texas and decided we would paint together for a week. After the first day of painting, I became very ill and thought it was a stomach virus or something I had eaten. In fact, I had been having stomach problems for a few weeks prior. After some research, we realized I had developed a strong allergy to oil paints and turpentine! We got rid of all oil based products in the Studio and I started using a water based acrylic paint. It was quite expensive.

Learning to paint with acrylics presented a huge challenge as they dry quickly in a matter of seconds and are nearly impossible to blend in comparison to oil paints, which take several days to dry completely and blending is no problem at all. Lots of new videos were studied and I continued to paint every day determined to learn the new medium. One weekend, I decided to paint a canvas and chose a landscape composition with an old Chapel high up in the mountains. I was painting as fast as I could before the acrylic dried and Ray laughingly said I was painting with both hands! When that experience was complete, I knew I could paint anything I wanted with acrylics.

A few years later we joined a local Art Association and we enjoyed making new friendships with other artists. We exhibited paintings in art shows, banks and other places during our tenor with the group. Soon I became President of my own Art Association, which was formed with the help of some very close and dear artist friends. We were a diverse group of lively, creative and energetic artists. Our meetings were fun, boisterous and informative. They were necessary for us because we always encouraged one another to keep painting no matter what! We exhibited paintings in different businesses on a continual basis and our artwork remains displayed at the city Library to this day.

You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.)

Now you will hear the text again. (Repeat.)

This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 15 seconds.)

This is the end of the Listening Test.

1) Staying in Shape is Important
2) Threat to Your Eyesight
3) Don’t Ignore Warning Signs
4) Use Alternative Medicine

5) Fat People Are at Risk
6) Turn a Bad Habit into a Good Idea
7) Choose Proper Nutrition
8) Prevention Is Better Than Cure

A. There are numerous problems associated with obesity. It is not just a cosmetic problem but also a health hazard. Doctors generally agree that the more obese a person is, the more likely he or she is to have health problems. This is because obesity has been linked to several serious medical conditions. People who are overweight can gain significant health benefits from losing weight.

B. Hey, couch potato! Don’t feel guilty indulging in serials or reality shows — use the commercials as an excuse to burn calories. There is probably an average of 15 minutes of commercials in an hour-long program. If you exercised through each commercial break during just two hours of TV, you’d already have met the recommended amount of daily exercise necessary to reduce health risks.

C. Regular checkups are a valuable tool in maintaining good health. Taking proper care of your health at the right time can help avoid a lot of problems in the future. The main aim of a checkup is to detect illness at an early stage. It’s good to find out that you have a health problem before it is too late so appropriate tests should be done at the right time.

D. Do you mainly exercise for a few weeks in January before you forget your New Year’s resolution, and then again when you realise your summer holiday is around the corner? You’d not be alone, but keeping fit is something you should do all year round. You might not be particularly bothered about your appearance or your weight, but keeping fit is as much about what’s on the inside as it is what’s on the outside.

E. Pain is our body’s means to indicate that something is wrong and requires immediate attention. Pain for a short time can be taken care of by a painkiller but if the soreness is lingering for too long, then it requires proper medical expertise. Sometimes life menacing problems have back pain and joint pain as symptoms and can, if neglected, do permanent damage.

F. Think about your car — the higher the grade of the fuel you put in it, the better it runs. Your body works the same way. If you eat healthy foods, you’ll be healthier and feel better. Eating well is easy if you’re aware of what foods are best for you. But don’t worry! Eating healthy food doesn’t mean eliminating every single thing you love from your diet.

G. Do you spend more than 3 hours a day working or maybe playing on a computer? If so, you are at a higher risk than casual computer users. Researchers warn that watching a computer screen for six or more hours a day might be linked to a progressive eye disease. This does not mean, however, that people who work on a computer for less than 3 hours a day will not suffer eye complications due to computer use.

Walls and wall building have played a very important role in Chinese culture. From the Neolithic period to the Communist Revolution, walls were an essential part of any vil lage or town. Not only towns and villages but the houses and the temples within them were somehow walled, and the houses also had no windows overlooking the street, A___________. The name for ‘city’ in Chinese (ch’eng) means ‘a wall’, and over these walled cities, villages, houses and temples presides the god of walls and mounts, whose duties were, and still are, B___________. Thus a great and extremely laborious task such as constructing a wall, C___________, must not have seemed such an absurdity.

However, it is indeed a common mistake to perceive the Great Wall as a single architectural structure, and it would also be erroneous to assume that it was built during a single dynasty. The building of the wall spanned various dynasties, and each of these dynasties somehow contributed to the construction of the Great Wall, D___________.

The role that the Great Wall played in the growth of Chinese economy was an important one. Throughout the centuries many settlements were established along the new border. The garrison troops were instructed to reclaim wasteland and to plant crops on it, roads and canals were built, E___________. All these undertakings greatly helped to increase the country’s trade and cultural exchange with many remote areas. Builders, garrisons, artisans, farmers and peasants left behind a trail of objects, including inscribed tablets, household articles, and written work, which have become extremely valuable archaeological evidence to the study of defence institutions of the Great Wall and the everyday life of those people F___________.

1) thus giving the feeling of wandering around a huge maze
2) which constructed the Great Wall
3) whose foundations had been laid many centuries ago
4) which was supposed to run throughout the country
5) to protect and be responsible for the welfare of the inhabitants

The new teacher arrived in the town with a belief in the educational benefits of paper folding: she had written a pamphlet for other educators entitled ‘The Place of Origami in the Classroom.’ One afternoon a week she taught her pupils basic designs and demonstrated more complex constructions. What really added fuel to their spark of interest was her collection of animals, birds and abstract shapes, built up over many years and kept ina specially constructed display cabinet mounted beside the coat hangers. Once the children had mastered the fundamental models and folds, inspired by the treasures from Japan, India and an unpronounceable place, they began to evolve designs and styles of their own.

In no time an origami craze engulfed the town. Extra supplies of multi-coloured and textured sheets of square papers were ordered through the local shop. The children also used paper they found in their own homes — shopping lists, music sheets, bills, receipts, old calendars, love letters, cigarette cards, seed catalogues. The fad seeped out into other aspects of town life. Just one example: the forge fashioned square frames that could sit inside a frying pan or on a griddle. This created a perfect receptacle for pouring batter. Skilled children would then fold the square pancake into a variety of shapes to be filled with fruit and cream.

Mrs. Deere, mother of Daniel, the most talented of the children in this speciality, introduced the origami pancake onto the local fountain card circuit. Fountain cards was a game requiring steady hands, a sense of proportion and three decks of cards with the sevens and jacks stripped. This game had all but completely died out, perhaps due to the arrival of a knife factory in the town and its detrimental impact on the manual dexterity of the population. Mrs. Deere was not a skilled fountain card player but Daniel’s creations, shaped like flowers and towers with sweet and savoury centres added an extra dimension to her Thursday night game. As Mrs. Peyton said, washing down a pancake swan with some mint tea, ‘God spent a long day dreaming up talents of an inconsequential and frivolous nature to distribute to those who missed the main go-around.’

All this would have passed, perhaps not even lasted as a memory, all these frivolous and inconsequential goings-on, but for an incident involving a boy named Bishop who lived some distance outside the town, formerly a miniaturist and now the only known paper vanisher.

Constructionists and miniaturists: a split in the ranks of origami makers. For the miniaturist the challenge existed in the realm of creating something tiny and perfect, a design fit for a pencil, a match or a knitting needle. Apparently an eight-year-old girl was on the edge of a breakthrough, folding a bee’s wing into her signature frog to fit on the head of a pin. For the constructionists a different challenge existed — designing larger and more complex structures and in some cases using non-paper materials. It was acknowledged that the Peytons’ daughter, Casen, was head and shoulders above all others. She was perhaps the only one with the vision and skills to reunite the two schools, but was blighted by her parents’ ambition for her in the realm of tapestry weaving, a proud family tradition.

Left to his own devices on a Saturday afternoon, Bishop had run out of craft paper and wished to practise a sleeping cat design. Having exhausted all other supplies in the house, he picked out an old letter that was on top of photographs and documents kept in a shoebox in his mother’s wardrobe, took it to his room and began folding. If all had gone to plan, he would have replaced the paper and his mother would be none the wiser. Absently, whilst warming up his fingers he folded the paper in half eight times, the maximum number of folds a square of paper could take, irrespective of size. He squeezed the tiny paper one more time, willing it to halve again and the impossible happened. The paper completely disappeared from between his thumb and first finger. It folded into nothing.

A. The Galapagos Islands are situated to the north-west of South America, six thousand kilometers from the continent. The islands occupy the territory of about forty five thousand square kilometers. They consist of thirteen main islands and a great number of smaller ones. The largest island is Isabela. The Galapagos Islands belong to Ecuador.

B. The relief of the islands is constantly changing because of volcanic activity. In geological terms, the territory is quite ‘young’. Fields of lava still create rocks and form new islands. That is why the Galapagos Islands are called ‘a place born of fire’ and the region is still developing. Probably soon it will look different on the maps.

C. The Galapagos Islands are one of the few places in the world without a native population. The first documented trip by humans to the Galapagos Islands was in the 16th century. Another theory says that representatives of ancient Indian cultures had also made journeys there long before. For centuries, the land remained attractive for pirates. People only settled there on a permanent basis, as official residents, in the 19th century.

D. Due to its rich wildlife, the Galapagos Islands have always been attractive for visitors. Among them was the famous British scientist, Charles Darwin. He formulated his Theory of Evolution after his observations of Galapagos’ flora and fauna. Those observations helped him to explain the origin of species in other parts of the world and describe their evolution. In his memory, the Darwin Research Station was opened in the Galapagos in the 1950s.

E. The Galapagos are rich in exotic fauna. Most species of birds, the sea lion, the sea iguana and gigantic tortoises, that live over a hundred years, are not found anywhere else in the world but there. The Galapagos tortoise can weigh up to 250 kg and tourists come to the islands specially to see them. No wonder that the tortoise became the symbol of the islands. And the name of Galapagos comes from the Spanish word ‘tortoise’.

F. Tourism in the Galapagos is a fast developing industry. The number of people who come here for diving, animal watching, and exploring lava tunnels is growing each year. It is obvious that uncontrolled human activity could spoil the unique natural features. Because of this risk, the islands were declared a national park and the flow of tourists is limited.

G. The Galapagos Islands offer a kind of vacation and entertainment everyone would find unforgettable. While parents can enjoy the boat rides and beaches, children would be absolutely happy to see the blue-footed birds and amazing tortoises or to find out about pirates and hidden treasure. Hotels and sports facilities are of a high quality, though they are rather expensive.

(3 – Not stated). Books from all over the world

Ann Morgan, a modern British writer, had not read a book translated from another language before 2012. Her literature collection consisted mainly of stories and novels by British and American authors, and they were all in English of course. This was not enough to be called a cosmopolitan reader!

At the start of the New Year, Ann made a resolution to read a book from every country in the world, written by a national writer. She wanted to complete the task by the end of the coming year. She made a catalogue of the countries, the members of the United Nations. When her list came to one hundred and ninety-six items, she realized it would be practically impossible to find a book from each of these countries.

The first idea was to check the local bookshop but they only had a small range of books. So, Ann decided to ask the world’s readers for help. She created a blog called “A Year of Reading the World” and asked all the readers to suggest her titles of books from their country available in English. The responses came very fast.

Ann was greatly surprised to find out how many people wanted to share their ideas and opinions about books. Some of them posted her the books. Others spent hours looking for references and resources for her. In addition, two writers from Turkmenistan and Panama sent her unpublished English versions of their novels.

But, even with such a great team of helpers, finding foreign books translated into English was not easy. The biggest problem was the small states in Africa. They had very few written books, and instead had mostly manuscripts or even traditional performances by local storytellers. But Ann did not give up and managed to get some absolutely brilliant literary samples from the African continent.

In addition to language problems, politics disturbed her plans too. In 2011 the new country of South Sudan was founded in Africa. Ann began panicking as the half-a-year- old country had produced no books since its creation! The only chance of getting a literary sample from this country was to fly there and find a storyteller. Fortunately, a local Internet contact put Ann in touch with a Sudanese writer, who sent her a precious copy of their book.

Ann spent the whole year collecting the books, reading them and writing her blog. According to her plan, she had to read a new book in two days. As she had a job, this was not easy to do. She had to sit up at night reading until her eyes became tired.

But it was worth it! During the year of her imaginary literary journey, Ann discovered a lot about the people of the world, their lives and mentalities. She has changed her perception of the world and made lots of new friends. In her blog, Ann confessed that it had been the most interesting year of her life.

  1. A uniform makes the school a better organized place.
  2. Uniforms help improve the discipline at schools.
  3. Uniforms can help prevent crimes at school.
  4. Uniforms will not make life at school better.
  5. Uniforms can teach students how to behave professionally.
  6. Getting used to uniforms is good for a future career.
  7. Uniforms make students focus more on their learning.

SpeakerA

I honestly support school uniforms and let me explain why. I think one of the problems our current generation is facing is that they are all influenced by gang culture. It is the root cause of numerous evils at schools, and many people from my school are members in the so-called school gangs. With uniforms, I believe, there are not so many chances for conflicts and violence. Besides, it creates a healthy team culture and harmony on campus.

SpeakerB

I think when a person hears the word ‘school’, the first two things that come to mind are discipline and rules. Everybody knows that we kids love to break rules and it is hard to make us obey. Almost daily at schools, it is common to spend some time making us obey certain rules and disciplining us. Making us wear a uniform is a part  of it but I don’t think there’s any point in trying to do so because kids will be kids. They never obey.

SpeakerC

My school has a dress code which is not exactly a uniform and some students treatthis too creatively. Every morning our teachers start to check our clothes and so on. This happens during the first class so I think a lot of valuable lesson time could be saved if we had a strict uniform policy at school. People in charge would not have
to worry about checking what each and every student is wearing and whether it’s acceptable or not.

SpeakerD

My school doesn’t have a uniform and I don’t like it. You may be surprised but look – the best schools in the country do have uniforms and nobody there minds that! I think a uniform creates a sense of belonging and a feeling of pride amongst students towards their institution. I think students wearing a school uniform are more likely to develop a sense of community spirit which can be later quite useful at work with teambuilding and things like that.

SpeakerE

I think school isn’t about studies now. It’s more about hanging out at the canteen, and playing music but you rarely hear anyone having a good conversation about a lecture. I wish we had a uniform to help us concentrate more on our studies. When all students are wearing a similar outfit, they are less concerned about what other
people are wearing. They tend to bond nicely with peers and can create an environment where they can learn in a group.

SpeakerF

I support uniforms because I think they are useful for my future career. Dress codes and uniforms are a part of practically every job now. Professionalism is very important as we grow up and especially when we enter a corporate setup. Of course, I understand that there are no uniforms in some offices but I believe professionalism is what uniform-friendly children are better at than casually dressed kids. So I don’t mind wearing a uniform to school.

В первом высказывании человек сразу говорит, что поддерживает школьную форму, приводя аргумент ближе к концу монолога – With uniforms, I believe, there are not so many chances for conflicts and violence. Это лучше всего соотносится с третьей фразой – Uniforms can help prevent crimes at school.

Автор пятого высказывания полагает, что форма помогает лучше сконцентрироваться на учебе, не отвлекаясь на одежду – I wish we had a uniform to help us concentrate more on our studies. В последнем же высказывании человек, с одной стороны, говорит о карьере, что вроде бы вписывается в шестое утверждение, но больший упор он делает на слово professionalism: Professionalism is very important as we grow up. Professionalism is something uniform friendly children are better at than casually dressed kids.

A. Jake succeeded in his school-leaving exams.

B. Jake has an elder brother.

C. Jake wants to teach the subject Miss Clark teaches.

D. Miss Clark is surprised with Jake’s career choice.

E. Jake doesn’t believe in the abilities of every student.

F. Miss Clark thinks Jake’s made the right choice.

G. Miss Clark isn’t happy to hear Jake’s words.

Teacher: Hello, Jake. You look great today.

Jake: Good evening, Miss Clark. Thank you for the compliment.

Teacher: I hope you’ll enjoy the party. After all, your classmates and you have certainly deserved it. You worked so hard during the academic year, and you passed your exams with flying colours. My colleagues and I are so proud of you all.

Jake: Oh, Miss Clark, of course we did a good job, but we are very grateful to our teachers. If not for you, our results wouldn’t be so good.

Teacher: It’s good to know that. Thank you. So, Jake, what are you going to do after the prom? Are you going to have a gap year?

Jake: Most of my classmates are going to travel somewhere, but I won’t be able to join them. I’m going straight to college.

Teacher: Why? Don’t you like to travel?

Jake: Of course, I do. Everybody likes to travel, don’t they? It’s just that this summer isn’t a good time to do it because I’ll have to help my brother. He’s just had surgery, you know.

Teacher: I hope your brother is doing fine. How did the operation go? Jake: It all went fine, thank you. The full recovery will take some time, but he’ll be absolutely fine in a couple of months.

Teacher: Oh, that’s excellent news. So, what college did you choose?

Jake: I’m going to Birmingham University. I want to be a teacher, like you.

Teacher: Really? I would never have thought you had chosen this career.

Jake: Well, I think it’s the most rewarding job in the world, so …

Teacher: It is, but mind you, not every student will succeed in your class. Sometimes, when one of your students fails, you blame yourself for it.

Jake: I think that’s true about many jobs, like doctors, for instance. I believe that every student has the potential for success and it’ll be so exciting because each new academic year will present new challenges and new potential successes.

Teacher: Well, Jake, if you are able to look at it that way, teaching is definitely your cup of tea.

Jake: Thank you, Miss Clark. It’s you and your colleagues who have inspired me.

Teacher: Thank you. Now it’s high time for you to join your friends, and it’s time for me to wipe away the tears – your words are so touching.

Jake: Sorry if I’ve upset you.

Teacher: No, that’s fine. It’s always good to hear such things, you know. See you later, Jake.

Jake: See you.

Про экзамены говорится во второй реплике учителя: you passed your exams with flying colours. Но даже если вы не знаете значения этой устойчивой фразы и не поняли, как именно сданы экзамены, не стоит переживать – сразу после этого учитель говорит «My colleagues and I are so proud of you all».

Про брата говорится чуть позднее – I’ll have to help my brother. He’s just had surgery, you know. I would never have thought you had chosen this career, Далее они обсуждают эту профессию и учеников, и Джейк говорит – I believe that every student has the potential for success – он верит в то, что у каждого ученика есть способности, значит, утверждение Е неверно.

Мисс Кларк считает, что Джейку подходит эта профессия , употребляя в речи популярный фразеологизм – if you are able to look at it that way, teaching is definitely your cup of tea. И, конечно, ей было приятно слышать слова ученика о том, что она и ее коллеги вдохновили его на выбор профессии – она говорит, что добрые слова ее тронули:  its time for me to wipe away the tearsyour words are so touching…. Its always good to hear such things.

Presenter: Today in our studio we have a Brazilian-born actress Alice Jones, who made her film debut at the age of 18 in the Oscar-nominated «City of God». Good afternoon, Alice!

Alice Jones: Good afternoon. It’s a pleasure to be here. Thank you for inviting me.

Presenter: Your biggest achievements are connected with Hollywood and even your surname now is English. Do you still have any connections in Brazil?

Alice Jones: Well, my roots certainly remain firmly in Brazil. I own a production company in São Paolo, the city in which I was raised. Many of my family members are in the film and television industry, and my aunt and mother are both actresses there and my sister is a producer.

Presenter: What inspired you to become an actress?

Alice Jones: I can’t say I’ve always been interested in stardom. Once as a teenager I saw a performance at a theatre, and I loved the play. For me, it changed my perspective on acting and theater. I was 14, and I was enchanted; I completely fell in love. Then I finished school in São Paolo and started attending a university for the performing arts. When I got the invitation to come to an audition, I remember exactly when they told me who was going to be in the film. These were the same actors as in that play. I thought it was written in the stars.

Presenter: Are you currently into any project?

Alice Jones: I am. It is based on a novel by a wonderful Spanish writer. I read the book eight years ago. A really good friend of mine gave me the book, and she said, “You need to read this book because it’s a beautiful, strong story about this woman. Maybe she’s a nice character for you to play, so just read it”. Years went by, and now they want to make a version of it in Spanish, and I was happy when they called me because I always thought it was such a beautiful character for a woman to play. When they called me, I couldn’t believe that eight years after I read the book and fell in love with the character, they came to me. It was very special.

Presenter: As far as I remember, it’s not the first time you’ve worked on a book you love.

Alice Jones: So true! One of my films, «Blindness», is also based on one of my favourite books, so when they invited me, I had the same feeling. For «Queen of the South», again, my main reason to sign up for it was the character and the book, because that was a role I really wanted to play. So right after I got cast, I went straight to the book and made notes, getting all the little details about what people say about her, who she is, what type of woman she is in the world that she’s born into, how she manages to survive – all that. I was just trying to honor the book and
have a better understanding of it.

Presenter: How do you prepare for your roles?

Alice Jones: I have an acting coach that helps me. He works with me on preparing – running lines and having ideas and developing different ways of approaching characters. When it’s a story, based on a book, I basically work off the book. The book is my main source of material.

Presenter: I think now you’ve worked more in English than in Portuguese. Is it still difficult for you to work in another language that’s not Portuguese?

Alice Jones: Even now, it’s still a challenge. Because I’m so close to my family and friends and I always speak Portuguese, my heart and mind go to Portuguese. Once I’m on the set, after three or four months doing the series working hard every day and only speaking English, it becomes easier. Your mindset is there and you’re dreaming in English. But it is hard; in a way you keep translating from one language to another.

Presenter: Thank you, Alice.

What do we learn about Alice at the beginning of the interview?

  1. She has an Academy award already.
  2. She’s 18 years old.
  3. She was born in Brazil.

Which of the following is TRUE about Alice’s family?

  1. She takes part in a business with her family.
  2. All of her relatives live in São Paolo.
  3. Many of her relatives work in show business.

Зато она рассказывает, что они работают в кино- и телеиндустрии – Many of my family members are in the film and television industry, and my aunt and mother are both actresses there and my sister is a producer.

What made Alice want to become an actress?

  1. A theatre play she once saw.
  2. Her school in São Paolo.
  3. Glossy magazines about stars.

Сразу после ведущий спрашивает, почему девушка решила стать актрисой, и она говорит, что в 14 лет увидела одну театральную постановку, которая глубоко ее впечатлила – I saw a performance at a theatre, and I loved the play. For me, it changed my perspective on acting and theater. I was 14, and I was enchanted; I completely fell in love.

Which is TRUE about Alice’s current project?

  1. Her character is very beautiful.
  2. Her part isn’t in English.
  3. Her friend offered her the role.

I always thought it was such a beautiful character for a woman to play.

Why did Alice sign up for Queen of the South?

  1. Because of the film director.
  2. Because of the role she had to play.
  3. Because she had written the book.

For «Queen othe South», again, my main reason to sign up for it was the character and the book, because that was a role I really wanted to play.

What does Alice’s acting coach help her with?

  1. Getting to know the character.
  2. Memorizing the lines.
  3. Suggesting ideas about costumes.

I have an acting coach that helps me. He works with me on preparing – running lines and having ideas and developing different ways of approaching characters.

What does Alice say about having to act in English?

  1. It’s easier when she spends a long time working on it.
  2. It’s no problem for her anymore.
  3. It makes her translate all the time.

Алиса говорит, что португальский язык ей намного ближе, но после нескольких месяцев частого использования английского использовать его в постановках становится легче – Once I’m on the set, after three or four months doing the series working hard everyday and only speaking English, it becomes easier. Your mindset is there and you’re dreaming in English. Она не говорит, что это удается ей совсем без проблем, но и переводить постоянно не приходится – хотя она и говорит «in a way you keep translating from one language to another», нужно помнить, что in a way значит «в некоторой степени», а не «все время», как в задании.

How to turn failure to success

A lot of authors speak about how true success is overcoming the fear of being unsuccessful. But that is easier said than done. We all face situations where we fail and it feels like everything is going wrong. That coveted job interview that does not result in a call back, that amazing person who doesn’t reciprocate romantic interest, that close friend who is not keen on hanging out anymore feature in all of our lives. Somewhere these experiences chip away at one’s sense of self, slowly eroding our self-worth.

Carrie Fisher, who had immortalised Princess Leia in Star Wars, had said it beautifully, “take your broken heart and make it into art”. That is exactly what

18-year-old Londoner Claudia did. She had received a rejection letter from Oxford, like many other students, in response to her application for a Classics course. However, she was not dejected by it. By the time her mother got home from work, Claudia had cut up the letter and transformed it into a beautiful piece of art.

When her mum posted Claudia’s art on Twitter, it touched a chord among thousands and went viral in a matter of days, having been liked and retweeted more than two hundred thousand times.

Claudia explained her motivations in such a way: “I just thought I had this letter, it’s not often that you get a letter dedicated to you from Oxford. So,

I thought it would be funny if I made it into something.” The letter is pretty much summarised in the phrases stuck into the painting: delivering the news, apologising, wishing her well.

She created the painting very quickly, explaining, “I suppose some of my feelings about the letter went into the artwork. Obviously I didn’t know it would go viral as I painted it for myself – but I think the message that it’s associated with now is that Oxbridge doesn’t determine your worth as a person, and I love that.”

A lot of people are saying Oxford should now take Claudia on an art course but that’s not really how it works.

She is joining another premier institution – Durham university – soon, leaving behind her brief disappointment from Oxford as she embarks on the new phase of her life. However, there are life lessons that this young girl can teach us on how to cope with rejection.

It always feels a bit hurtful to be rejected, but when you can turn your disappointment into art, it helps you to move on. After all, closed doors hide open ones. It’s impossible that things go well all the time. Even for those who seem super successful, there are still low points and adverse situations they have had to tackle. But brooding over what did not work out will only lead to missing out newer opportunities. Success and failure can truly be understood only in retrospect. What seems like heart-breaking rejection might turn out to be the start of the best thing ever to happen to you in another five years.

Letting go is important but what is even more important is letting go beautifully. As the proverb goes – “In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you”.

Failure is a part of life. You can call it whatever you want – a setback, an emotional let down, a breakup, a loss, but part of the reason why the experience is so painful is because at some level you feel you failed. The solution here is being open to the bigger lessons of life. After all, learning a new way to see situations can be the very key to your next success.
