A Missing Street
Mark had worked in the Сity Hall for more than twenty years. He registered the files with the names of all the streets in Montreal. Mark lived near the City Hall and rarely walked round the city but he knew the location of the streets very well. He knew Montreal better than the policemen or taxi drivers.
His job was pretty dull and monotonous, but Mark preferred the office to his flat in Oven Street anyway. His neighbours were noisy and unpleasant. Every time he tried to explain the importance of his work, they looked down on him as a low-level clerk. They failed to understand that they got their mail only because Oven Street had its postal index in one of the files in the City Hall.
Once Mark’s peaceful life was disturbed. He opened one of the drawers in his study and found an index card stuck at the back. He drew it out carefully. Green Bottle Street it said. Mark stared at it in wonder. He could not remember any street with that name. He searched all the files but could not find anything. It was not on the list.
Mark examined the card once more. There was no mistake. The paper was old and yellow. The last inspection date marked on the card was more than fifteen years before. Mark was frozen with horror. It was a lost, forgotten street! For so many years it had existed a mile away from the Hall, and nobody knew about it.
Deep in his heart, Mark sometimes had thought of such a possibility. There were so many winding streets in the city that it looked like a labyrinth. But with all these files it simply could not happen. Vaguely he remembered that at the beginning of his career his office had moved to another floor and all the cards were made afresh. Maybe at that time one of the cards had got stuck in the drawer.
Mark slept badly that night. In the morning he put the card in his pocket and went looking for Green Bottle Street. Though he knew its location, he passed it twice. Finally, he came up to a wooden door, behind which a narrow street started. He opened the door and stepped inside. Green Bottle Street lay before him.
It was named after its shape. On either side of the street there were three well-kept houses with nice, small gardens in front. At the end of the street there was a brick wall, which separated it from the rest of the world. Everything there was quiet and safe. An old woman was watering roses in one of the gardens.
She told Mark that they used to pay taxes and get the mail until they were forgotten. Then they built a wooden door with a lock to protect their tiny peaceful area from passers-by and officials. They helped people who got tired of the busy city and wanted to take a break for a while. Some rooms in the houses were for rent.
Mark understood that the yellow card he had found in the drawer, could break people’s peaceful but fragile world. He sighed and tore the card to pieces. For all he cared, Green Bottle Street could remain lost forever.
Mark’s responsibility was to invent names for the city’s streets.

  6. A personal vision
  7. A bridge between worlds

  • Two people never see the same rainbow. Each person sees a different one. It happens because the raindrops are constantly moving so the rainbow is always changing too. Each time you see a rainbow it is unique and it will never be the same! In addition, everyone sees colours differently according to the light and how their eyes interpret it.

  • A rainbow is an optical phenomenon that is seen in the atmosphere. It appears in the sky when the sun’s light is reflected by the raindrops. A rainbow always appears during or immediately after showers when the sun is shining and the air contains raindrops. As a result, a spectrum of colours is seen in the sky. It takes the shape of a multicoloured arc.

  • Many cultures see the rainbow as a road, a connection between earth and heaven (the place where God lives). Legends say that it goes below the earth at the horizon and then comes back up again. In this way it makes a permanent link between what is above and below, between life and death. In some myths the rainbow is compared to a staircase connecting earth to heaven.

  • We all believe that the rainbow is arch-shaped. The funny thing is that it’s actually a circle. The reason we don’t see the other half of the rainbow is because we cannot see below the horizon. However, the higher we are above the ground, the more of the rainbow’s circle we can see. That is why, from an airplane in flight, a rainbow will appear as a complete circle with the shadow of the airplane in the centre.

  • In many cultures there is a belief that seeing a rainbow is good. Legends say that if you dig at the end of a rainbow, you’ll find a pot of gold. Rainbows are also seen after a storm, showing that the weather is getting better, and there is hope after the storm. This is why they are associated with rescue and good fortune. If people happen to get married on such a day, it is said that they will enjoy a very happy life together.

  • You can never reach the end of a rainbow. A rainbow is all light and water. It is always in front of you while your back is to the sun. As you move, the rainbow that your eye sees moves as well and it will always ‘move away’ at the same speed that you are moving. No matter how hard you try, a rainbow will always be as far away from you as it was before you started to move towards it.

  • To see a rainbow you have to remember some points. First, you should be standing with the sun behind you. Secondly, the rain should be in front of you. The most impressive rainbows appear when half of the sky is still dark with clouds and the other half is clear. The best time to see a rainbow is on a warm day in the early morning after sunrise or late afternoon before sunset. Rainbows are often seen near waterfalls and fountains.

The Best Job in the World

Have you ever heard of the Great Barrier Reef? It is the world’s largest coral reef system along the eastern coast of Australia. In February 2009 an extraordinary position was advertised by the Australian Tourism Office. The advertisement ran that the Great Barrier Reef needed a caretaker for half a year. It was for a special person who would look after the Reef.

The job offered a large salary, free accommodation in a luxury villa, and transportation there and around the islands. All expenses would be paid: the winner wouldn’t need to spend any extra money on anything.

The job’s duties were pretty simple. You could only dream of such requirements. First, the person had to speak English and swim well. Second, on the island his responsibility included writing a weekly Internet blog. That’s right, weekly, not even daily! The job description also required the successful applicant to explore the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, swim, make friends with the locals and generally enjoy the tropical climate and lifestyle. A real dream!

Within the first 2 days of the contest, the tourism office received more than seven thousand online applications. All told, 34,000 people of all different nationalities applied. Each made and presented a 60-second video resume. They had to be creative and they were. In the end 16 people were chosen, who flew to Australia for the final selection. The candidates were interviewed and the winner was Ben Southall from the UK.

Ben greatly enjoyed the dream job he had got. He realised that people knew very little about planet earth and its treasures. Living in big cities, they forgot how important the flora and fauna of this world were. Every time Ben went outdoors, he could discover something new. “Every time I dived or went underwater, I forgot about all the troubles above water and concentrated on living in the moment. It was a good way to clean the mind and build respect for the natural world,” Ben said.

Ben’s life on the island was not just fun. It was very busy, busier than most people imagined, and certainly busier than Ben himself had imagined. He worked seven days a week and up to 19 hours a day. The Best Job included travelling to over 60 islands of the Reef almost every day. It was not just looking after the Reef, Ben had a lot of meetings, press conferences and interviews. He was getting a lot of attention all the time and he couldn’t get away from it. That was probably the hardest part of the job.

Moreover, any adventure has a certain degree of risk. Swimming and diving on the Great Barrier Reef was not different. Ben had to deal with whales, sharks and other huge sea creatures. Surprisingly, the most dangerous thing was a small jellyfish about the size of a little finger. It’s considered to be extremely poisonous and Ben was stung by it. He had to spend a couple of days in hospital but luckily recovered after a course of antibiotics.

Ben often says that the project has taught him a few valuable lessons. Working with the Internet is one of those jobs you can do 24 hours a day. Ben realised it was hard to separate life and work, but this he had to do. He also said: «I’ve learned that we get one life on earth so we have to use it. There’ll always be other countries to visit, other people to meet and other adventures to meet. This is what I wish to do. I’m planning to go to Asia in a few years time».

You have 30 minutes to do this task.

You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen friend, Ben.

… I am very busy now preparing for my exams but yesterday I went to the cinema with my friends. We saw a new film about Sherlock Holmes. You’ve probably seen it too… What kinds of films do you like? Where do you prefer watching films—in the cinema or at home and why? What would you make a film about if you had a chance?..

Write him a letter and answer his 3 questions.

Write 100—120 words. Remember the rules of letter writing.

Now we are ready to start.

Dialogue А

A: Can I help you?

B: Yes, please. You see, I want to adopt a puppy, but I don’t know much about dogs or how to take care of them.

A: Right. I can recommend this book. Have a look—it gives a detailed description of the most popular breeds of dog so that you can choose which is the best for you.

B: Oh, and it also contains very good pictures! These puppies are so cute! Yes, I’m taking it… though the price is rather high… Anyway.

A: The cash-desk is over there.

B: Fine. Thank you.

Dialogue B

A: I’ve got a complaint, I’m afraid.

B: What’s happened, sir? Just let us know. We do everything we can to keep our guests happy.

A: The problem is… that… there’s a dog in the room next to mine.

B: Yes, and what’s the actual problem? Many of our visitors choose us for just that reason. We admit pets which is very convenient for those who travel with animals.

A: But why did nobody tell me about that? The dog barks! I can’t sleep properly at night.

B: Sorry, sir. But the only thing we can do is to offer you another room. I’ll just check which one would be quieter.

Dialogue C

A: It’s pretty cold today, isn’t it?

B: Yes, it is. But I’ve got used to walking in any weather.

A: Is it because you have to walk your dog?

B: Yes. Twice a day, at least. We are heading to the pond at the moment—there are special facilities for dogs there, like ladders and ramps. Are you going there too?

A: Oh, no, I’m going home. That’s enough jogging for me for today. Too cold!

Dialogue D

A: Are you leaving? So soon?

B: Yeah. I have to. I need to walk my dog and he won’t accept any excuses on my part.

A: Yeah, I understand… What kind of dog have you got?

B: A Labrador. He’s very clever but hates it if we don’t follow his routine.

A: That’s a shame… I mean that you are leaving… because it’s so cool here. And the music is great.

B: Ok. Just one more dance and I’ll be off.

A: Yay! A good decision.

You have 20 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 20 seconds.)

Now you will listen to the dialogues again. (Repeat.)

This is the end of the task. You now have 20 seconds to check your answers.

(Pause 20 seconds.)

Speaker A

It’s large and spacious. There is a whiteboard, desks and a teacher’s table but the most interesting feature is the special graffiti wall. We can write all kinds of questions on the material we are studying at the moment. For example, if you don’t understand something, you can write your question on the wall and another student or teacher writes the answer.

Speaker B

I’m always glad to come to this room some time before the lesson and study the maps on the walls and samples of stones and rocks on the shelves. Yes, I find geography very interesting and it’s not a problem for me to spend hours writing out facts about famous travellers and their discoveries. My favourite classroom activity is studying and completing maps.

Speaker C

My grade for the Maths test was unusually high but I’m not happy about it at all. My friend Tracy isn’t talking to me because of this. The thing is that in the exam room I sat next to Tracy and she’s sure I copied the answers from her paper. That’s not true but she doesn’t believe me. She thinks I cheated and she hates any dishonesty.

Speaker D

I study in a large and modern school with well equipped classrooms, a good gym and a swimming pool. The latter are very important for me because I use them practically every day. When the lessons are over, my friend and I go to the gym to exercise or to play volleyball. Twice a week I have a swimming class and my friend does all kinds of experiments in the school chemistry laboratory.

Speaker E

Students’ performance depends a lot on their ability to research and look for information by themselves. On the shelves the books are arranged in the alphabetical order. To find the book you need to know the author. There is also an electronic catalogue and access to the internet resources. Just type in the key word to find whatever you want.

You have 30 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 30 seconds.)

Now you will listen to the texts again. (Repeat.)

This is the end of the task. You now have 20 seconds to check your answers.

(Pause 20 seconds.)

Now we are ready to start.

Kevin: Hi! I’m Kevin. Can I sit here?

Kate: Yes, sure.

Kevin: And what’s your name?

Kate: Kate.

Kevin: Is this your first visit to Paris?

Kate: Yes, I’m from Canada and this is my first visit to Europe or anywhere else. I’ve never been abroad before and everything seems very exciting. And where are you from?

Kevin: From Liverpool. My family’s lived in that part of England for ages and we seldom travel anywhere either.

Kate: My parents are completely different; they travel a lot because of their job, but they’ve never taken me with them.

Kevin: I see.

Kate: But this time we are travelling all together as a family. Today we are going to have a guided excursion of the historical part of Paris. Are you here on your own?

Kevin: No. It’s a school trip. The whole class are here and two teachers to supervise us.

Kate: Oh, it must be interesting travelling in a large group.

Kevin: Yeah. We were awarded this trip when we won the city competition.

Kate: Was it a sports competition?

Kevin: No, it was a competition for school rock bands.

Kate: You’re a musician?

Kevin: Sort of. In our band I play the drums.

Kate: Do you see music as your career? Everyone nowadays wants to be either a celebrity or a computer genius.

Kevin: Not in my case. Music is just for fun. I’m deeply interested in physics and biology. I think that absolutely fantastic discoveries are awaiting us in these fields. They could completely change our idea of the universe and of ourselves.

Kate: So, you want to do scientific research?

Kevin: Exactly.

Kate: But that means getting a very good education…

Kevin: Yes. This is my last year at school and I hope to start my university course this summer. I’ve got good grades and it makes my plan sound quite realistic.

Kate: Yes, it looks like a good one. You seem to have planned your life very well. I can’t even make up my mind on what souvenirs to buy for my friends back home…

Kevin: I’ve found a shop with some old photos of the city. I bought several pictures there as gifts for my friends. They’re not expensive and the images are lovely.

Kate: Yeah, I think that would be better than heavy souvenir mugs or T-shirts with prints. Could you tell me where the shop is?

1. A risky place to live in

2. In the past

3. Night guards

4. The miracle of water

5. United but varied

6. An important food producer

7. A dream state

8. Attractive to IT specialists

A. The United States is so big that there are six time zones. If you want to phone from Washington to Hawaii or central Alaska, there is a six-hour time difference. The geography and climate of the United States are extremely diverse. While people go to the beach in Florida, California and Hawaii, others, in Alaska and the Midwest, are wearing thick coats and trying to keep warm.

B. California seems to have everything – a beautiful coastline on the Pacific with beaches and a warm climate, rocky national parks and amazing skiing and snowboarding opportunities. Its largest cities, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and the state capital, Sacramento, offer cultural variety and excitement. Southern California is home to such popular attractions as Disneyland and Hollywood.

C. There are many reasons for Americans to move to California, but there are also reasons to stay away. Some people say it’s a great place to visit, but they wouldn’t want to live there. In recent years, there has been drought followed by flooding and thousands of people have become homeless, and the crops were ruined. Frequent forest fires have burnt the land and destroyed people’s homes.

D. California produces more farming products than any other American state. All kinds of fruit and vegetables grow well in the moderate climate. It is especially known for its avocados and grapes. California is not technically a «breadbasket» and it is not a top five American producer of any grain product, but it is, surprisingly, the nation’s largest dairy provider. E. The most famous children’s attraction in the world is in California. Disneyland occupies 85 acres, and lots of people are busy keeping it in order. Аnd not only people. After the park closes, an army of four-legged “workers” go out to do their job. It’s not common knowledge that Disneyland “employs” 200 wild cats that roam the grounds after sunset. Their job is to keep rats and mice away from the park. And during daylight hours the cats have a rest, hiding on the territory.

F. It is the hottest place on Earth. Yet here you can find dry lands and snowcovered peaks, beautiful sand dunes and rocky canyons. For five months of the year there is severe heat in Death Valley, and for the next seven the temperature goes down slightly. Rain rarely gets past the mountains that guard the valley. However, even this small amount of rain turns the desert into a vast colourful garden. Despite the high temperature, more than 1000 kinds of plants live within the valley.

G. South of San Francisco is Santa Clara Valley. It is famous because it has so many companies that specialize in computer technology. In fact the valley is better known as Silicon Valley, named after the material that computer chips are made of. There are also many research centers for computer hardware and software. Thousands of people from the US and abroad have moved to California to work in the computer industry.

Louis Armstrong

Louis Armstrong played jazz, sang jazz and wrote jazz. He recorded hit songs for fifty years and his music is still heard today on television, radio and in movies.

Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans, in the state of Louisiana on August 4th, 1901. His father was a factory worker and left the family soon after Louis’s birth. Young Louis was desperately poor. He lived with his sister, mother and grandmother in the poorest area of New Orleans known as the Battlefield because of the fighting and shooting that often happened there.

When Louis was eleven years old, he was arrested for firing a gun into the air on New Year’s Eve. He was sent to a reform school, where he learned to play the trumpet in the school’s band. Eighteen months later Louis was back home and already dreaming of the life of a musician. He sold newspapers, unloaded boats and sold coal. However, in the evenings Louis played the trumpet with local groups or went to clubs to listen to jazz bands. He soon became friends with one of the greatest musicians of the time, Joe Oliver, who became young Louis’s teacher. As Louis’s skills developed, he began to perform professionally.

He was soon able to stop working on manual labour jobs and began concentrating full-time on music, playing at parties, dances, and at local cafes. He joined Joe Oliver’s band and moved to Chicago. Later, Louis organised his own band and began to record one of the greatest series of songs in the history of jazz. Louis developed a unique style of singing: he could make his voice sound like a musical instrument and he could make an instrument sound like a singer’s voice. Louis enjoyed singing improvised melodies and rhythms. Armstrong was an easygoing and communicative person. His fellow musicians called him “Satchelmouth” because of his wide smile. Later, it was shortened to “Satchmo”.

Armstrong’s biggest hits came later in his life. In 1964, his version of the song «Hello Dolly» was a top hit around the world. It even replaced a top-selling hit by the hugely popular British group, the Beatles. Three years later, he appeared in the film version of “Hello Dolly” with singer Barbra Streisand. The song “What a Wonderful World”, recorded in 1968, was his final big hit.

Louis Armstrong never finished the fifth grade in school, yet he wrote two books about his life and many stories for magazines. He appeared in more than thirty movies. He composed many jazz pieces. He won several gold records and many other awards. Armstrong performed about three hundred concerts each year, travelling all over the world. He became known as the legend and symbol of jazz.

The soldier off the buttons in a row
Brighter sunny day gold burn
The sentries on duty in the city of Spring
Takes us to the gates
Comrade Comrade Sergeant Sergeant
There is a soldier in the city on an unfamiliar street
And the smiles on the girls’ bright whole street
Do not get me wrong but for a soldier girl thing
To his beloved waited far
A soldier will have a drink kvas buy a popsicle
He hurries out of the movie
Carousel his music ringing rush
And left him
It will remain a half-day afternoon
There is a soldier in the city on an unfamiliar street
And the smiles on the girls’ bright whole street
Do not get me wrong but for a soldier girl thing
To his beloved waited far
Where favorite linden lives rustle
And sits in the carousel is not her soldiers
But others in what one and all
Unless you wait right
Soldier her soldier his
There is a soldier in the city on an unfamiliar street
And the smiles on the girls’ bright whole street
Do not get me wrong but for a soldier girl thing
To his beloved waited far
There is a soldier in the city on an unfamiliar street
And the smiles on the girls’ bright whole street
Do not get me wrong but for a soldier girl thing
To his distant beloved waited.

1. My accommodation in Rome

2. New friends

3. Getting the job

4. The working day

5. Plans for next summer

6. Language experience

7. The top tourist attraction

8. General impressions of the country

A. I’ve just returned from Italy, and it was the most beautiful working holiday anyone could dream of. Yes, I saw the Colosseum with my own eyes! It was built in the first century AD — the amphitheatre could house as many as 50,000 people. It’s difficult to imagine the gladiators fighting there and the public watching the cruel show. There were also fights with lions. Fortunately, there are no lions in the Colosseum now — only cats. And there are a lot of them!

B. The Colosseum was the first thing I wanted to see in Rome, but not the only one that impressed me. I used my camera a lot — Italy is a country with a great cultural

heritage. Apart from the views, Italy is a country of delicious food — I’ve never eaten such gorgeous pizzas! I’d have certainly put on some weight if I hadn’t had to walk such a lot — we were saving on transport because Italy is an expensive country.

C. It took us thirty-five minutes every morning to get from the hostel where we were staying to the pizzeria we were working. Our room was very small, it had a poor view, just the house opposite, but that wasn’t a problem — we didn’t spend much time there anyway. We had only the basics in our room — two beds, hangers for clothes, a little table and one chair. There was a laundry downstairs and a shared kitchen to prepare meals.

D. As for the kitchen, we didn’t use it much — we ate at work! Our working day started at 9 am and lasted till 9 pm. We had a long siesta (a break between two and five in the afternoon) which we used for sightseeing in spite of the heat. And in the evening there were usually lots of customers and we had to be quick and attentive so as not to confuse their orders. We felt absolutely exhausted when we came home.

E. Anyway we felt privileged to have got the job. It was Anna, my best friend, who suggested working holidays in Italy. She found the vacancies and sent our CVs to the manager. At first I didn’t know what to say as I wasn’t sure I wanted to work in summer. But on the other hand, the idea of earning my own money and seeing Italy was very attractive.

F. I’m glad I agreed to Anna’s suggestion — we enjoyed living in a new country and meeting new people. Italians are very sociable and easy-going. Our fellow workers showed us lots of interesting places and it was fun to explore the country together. Anna and I really hope that they’ll come to Britain one day and we’ll be able to show them our country too. We are going to keep in touch.

G. We didn’t know Italian when we went there. Some people in the pizzeria spoke English and they helped us a lot. Two weeks later we were able to understand what the customers were asking us about and we spoke basic Italian to them. Italian is beautiful — I like how it sounds and it’s not at all difficult. We plan to go on learning it in case we want to work in the pizzeria again.
